Pressure on top side as Haslemere hit six

By Farnham Herald in Hockey

WITH this convincing win, Haslemere Ladies moved to within three points of Hampshire Women’s League leaders Aldershot & Farnham who were held to a goalless draw by Andover.

Basingstoke were up for a physical game and it was the visitors who took an early lead. Haslemere reacted positively and some smart link-up play between Sarah Elworthy and Alex Hardy left Alice Toynton with a simple tap-in for the equaliser.

A deflected shot restored the lead for Basingstoke, but at that stage Haslemere stepped up their work-rate by at least 20 per cent.

Heidi Wells deflected Donna Read’s cross into the top left corner and Toynton put Haslemere ahead for the first time after rounding a defender and sliding the ball home for her second goal; 3-2 at half-time.

Solid play at the back by Kate Hutchings, Bex Mitchell, Izzy Breen and Mel Knight was the basis for Haslemere’s complete dominance in the second half

Wells beat the keeper in a one-on-one for her second goal and then Toynton clinched her hat-trick with a deflection into the top of the net.

Hannah Enticknap claimed Haslemere’s sixth and final goal, seizing on a rebound and smacking the ball home.

Haslemere 2, Havant II 1. Haslemere recorded a valuable midweek victory on March 1 with goals from Donna Read and Alice Toynton.
