ANDY Vernon of Aldershot, Farnham & District led all the way to win the UK Inter Counties cross country title by 24 seconds from Southampton’s Alex Teuten.
However, despite providing the first two runners home, Hampshire had to settle for fourth in the senior men’s team contest at Loughborough on Saturday.
The individual bronze medallist, Andy Maud of Highgate Harriers, led a Surrey side that also included AFD athletes Gus Cockle (28th) and Dane Blomquist (77th) to the silver medals in the team competition.
There were two AFD runners in the Surrey team that won the senior women’s race. Laura Gent was 38th and Katie Bingle 46th.
Louise Small, in fourth place, and Lauren Hall, 13th, led Hampshire to the bronze medals.
Surrey also won the under-13 boys’ event with a quartet that was completed by Sam Bodoano in tenth. Runners-up were Hampshire whose first man to finish was Harry Hyde in sixth.
