ALTON High Street took a step back in time on Saturday as it was filled with the colour, grace and elegance of the town’s 10th annual Regency Day.
With costumed re-enactors, parasols unfurled, dancing, music, horse and carriage rides, street entertainment and market stalls lining the route, visitors flocked into town – some from overseas – to enjoy the sun and the festive atmosphere.
It was a fitting launch for Jane Austen Regency Week, made special this year as it commemorates the 200th anniversary of Jane’s death.
The festivities have continued throughout the week with an impressive line-up of activities and events, including music from the period, talks, singing, walks, dancing, house and garden tours, embroidery workshops, cream teas, and films.
It will culminate this weekend with the Victorian Cricket match on Butts Green on Sunday, followed by a Regency Supper in the evening at the Alton House Hotel.
