TENNIS Finals Day at The Bourne Club on June 25 was the longest in recent memory, with the last match finishing after 9pm.
In all, 153 matches were played over two months, culminating in a long, hot final Sunday, with most matches going to three sets.
Remarkably, Jo Brooker was on court from 12 noon until 9pm, with only a change of clothes and a snack between matches, while she played in four of the main finals, winning two: the ladies’ singles against Rosemary Wilson and the ladies’ doubles with partner Nina Cerullo against Rosemary Wilson and Barbara Awbery.
Both her victories were close-fought and the contrast of styles produced some very entertaining tennis. Brooker, with her easy power and placement, was up against Wilson’s vast experience and excellent slice and touch. Brooker fought back from 1-6 down in the second set to take the title in three.
Harry Neate and Alex Fricker retained their men’s doubles crown, defeating Brian Condren and Oliver Easterbrook in a tense, nail-bitingly close match, with a tie-break in the final set.
Clive Bertram won the men’s singles, overcoming reigning champion Brian Condren in another thriller.
Nina Cerullo, apart from taking the ladies’ doubles with Jo Brooker, also won the O45 mixed doubles with partner Andy Paton, defeating Brooker and Andy Bedwell.
The main mixed doubles title went to Victoria Brown and Brian Condren who defeated Jo Brooker and Alex Fricker.
Amanda Webster, chairman of Bourne Club’s tennis section, said: “It was a great day of competitive tennis, with many long and close matches featuring many of our top players. This year, it was good to see that some new names will be added to the honours board.”
