ALTON Social ladies were on the rampage again last week, this time in the Hampshire Benevolent Triples.

Sue Murray, Brenda Plumpton and Margaret Holden won five 15-end triples over two days to reach the semi-finals as Northern Area winners.

And the Social ladies had a double success against Cove in the North Hants Fours. Doreen Atkins, Lesley Johnson, Marjorie Rowledge and skip Caroline Goodeve defeated Frankie Brandon’s four and Sue Murray, Flo Ward, Sheila Goodwin and skip Margaret Holden were winners against Sarah Bowen’s four.

The two Social teams now meet in the semi-final.

Social’s Basingstoke Triples League team lost 5-0 at Kingsclere. The Whitchurch League 2 team, who can’t buy a win at the moment, went down 4-1 to bottom team Oakley.

Social popped across to Alton for what turned out to be a very close Stan Hardman League match. Trailing on all three rinks at the tea break, Social came out with renewed vigour and Doreen Atkins, Bernie Murray and skip Marc Gorman turned a seven-shot deficit into a five-shot win. George Roberts’ triple won by a single shot to give Alton the overall shots lead by one, but a it was a 4-3 points win for Social.

Alton Social men returned to Kingsclere for a tough Basingstoke Fours League match, hoping to avenge Monday’s loss.

The Mark Fyfield rink were comfortable winners and Adam White’s men secured an 11-shot victory. The Dave Atwell rink just lost out, but Social emerged from torrential rain 4-1 points winners and they maintain top spot.

On Sunday, Alton Social entertained Friends of Bowls England, with players travelling from several counties to take part. The weather was not kind, so the venue was hastily switched to Chawton Park. Social won a close indoors contest by 18 shots.

• This Friday (July 28), Social host Bowls England in the final special fixture to celebrate the club’s new home.
