The Haslemere for Ukraine group is appealing for anyone who has accommodation options for refugees to come forward.

The Facebook group aims to provide support, a home and more for Ukrainian refugees.

The group is now urgently looking for anyone who has rooms or properties to let to – or space in their homes to host – Ukrainian refugees.

Volunteer Jo Mackay said: “The key thing now is finding new hosts.

“Some of those hosting now cannot host beyond six months and we need to find new places for these guests to stay – either hosts, or people who would be able to offer rental accommodation for them. Many have jobs now and can pay a monthly rent.

“Likewise, we still have Ukrainians seeking to come here for the first time we need hosts for.”

Haslemere for Ukraine is playing an active role in coordinating local services for refugees and helping them settle in the area.

Jo said: “The job centre now run weekly sessions in Haslemere to save Ukrainians going to Guildford for appointments. This reduces stress and costs for them – but the support they are getting is exceptional. We have a lady who used to have her own recruitment company who is providing additional support with finding jobs and working on CVs with guests.

“We are constantly working with local groups to provide guests with social activities – Haslemere Festival and Haslemere Hall donated tickets and we have more planned.”

One of the services currently on offer is English lessons.

Jo said: “We have English lessons available twice a week for three different levels of English – beginners, medium and advanced.

“These lessons are held at the Herons Leisure Centre – they generously gave us the space to use for free and all lessons are run entirely by volunteers.”

A number of other events have also been organised.

Jo added: “Hemingways gave its venue for free for a big event for Ukrainian refugees.

“Churcher’s College Junior School has also been amazing.

“The pupils put together holiday boxes to give to all local Ukrainian children at the start of the summer holidays.

“They also ran free art classes for a week during the holidays.

“Thanks to all the local businesses and groups which have supported us and thanks to the amazing volunteers who give up their time to help.”
