HISTORIC St Lawrence Church in Alton will move on through time from last month’s Civil War re-enactment to host a special service to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Britain.
The service to commemorate the largest and most sustained aerial engagement of the Second World War, involving the RAF?and the feared Luftwaffe takes place on Sunday.
Starting at 6.30pm, the evensong is being organised by Reverend Andrew Micklefield, vicar of the Parish of the Resurrection, and Alton Town Council. Everyone is welcome to the service as the town remembers those who fought so bravely, and the many who lost their lives during the Battle of Britain in 1940.
Members of the Alton Air Cadet Corps and thw Royal British Legion will represent the Royal Air Force, and Alton mayor Pam Jones will take to the floor for a reading.
Mrs Jones said: “I’m honoured to have been invited to take part in the service to mark the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Britain. This is Alton’s way of thanking ‘The Few’, both men and women, whose courage and endurance saved Britain all those years ago.”
Rev Micklefield added: “It is a privilege for the Parish of the Resurrection to hold this special evensong to recognise the anniversary of the Battle of Britain. As we praise God and say prayers we shall remember with gratitude those who took part in this part of the Second World War.
“I hope many will attend from across our town and I look forward to welcoming them to St Lawrence Church.”
