FOR many people, using a computer or a smartphone is something taken for granted. Not so for Radian resident Philippa Butcher, a blind woman living in Alton.

After Radian arranged for her to receive some one-to-one digital training, Philippa was disappointed to discover that the provider only had limited knowledge of the specialist computer software she had to help her with everyday use of her computer. After her initial feedback, Radian spoke to the trainers on her behalf.

Anxious to improve Philippa’s experience of the training provided and eager to learn more about the Dolphin Guide software, Silver Training arranged another free session.

Tutor Paul Rowley visited Philippa at her home so he could give her one-to-one assistance. Dolphin Guide is a vocalised menu which enables her to contact friends and family by e-mail, scan and read letters that she receives in the post, browse the internet, and write letters of her own.

Philippa said of the follow-up training experience: “A lot of people of my age are scared to use the computer or a smartphone but they really shouldn’t be. I had such a positive experience with Silver Training.

“Even though the tutor knew little about the software I was using, he taught me a lot about my smartphone and I am now able to make a call without needing the internet to do so.”

As digital audio broadcasting isn’t available where Philippa lives, Paul also helped her access digital radio stations on her iPhone, using the inbuilt VoiceOver tool. She can now listen to all her favourite radio programmes without needing to use her computer.

Paul was delighted to work with Philippa.

“I’ve been so impressed with Philippa’s determination, good humour and willingness to take on challenges,” he said. “She has taught herself how to touch type among other things and she really enjoys the shortcuts she has learned.”
