A new crossing is set to be installed on a busy Hampshire road so pupils at a high school and sixth form can cross safely.
The site is on a single-carriageway section on Portsmouth Road in Liphook, just south of the junction with The Firs.
Hampshire County Council has approved the expenditure of £360,000 for the toucan crossing which it said will provide a signal-controlled crossing point, offering access to the new rear gate behind Bohunt School.
Bohunt School has around 400 pupils from 11 to 18 years old. The council said to improve the walking route, it was found new rear access to the school could shorten the journey and make a better direct route.
The council granted planning permission for the new rear school access in 2022 with the condition that a formal signalised crossing on Portsmouth Road should be provided.
The proposed plan involves the removal of the current uncontrolled crossing and replacing it with a new toucan crossing closer to the junction with The Firs. Work is expected to start in the spring.
Work will see the widened and resurfaced footway converted to a shared-use footway/cycleway.
As a result, it is expected that during peak times, traffic flow would be reduced through the mini-roundabouts in the centre of Liphook.
Students will be able to avoid the village centre and reduce congestion around the main school entrance using the new pedestrian gate route via The Firs.
The scheme will be delivered using the funding allocation approved within the capital programme for 2023/24, with £360,000 of developer contributions.
