A CELEBRATION cake topped with a picture of the cover was cut to launch a new book at Headley Church Hall last Saturday.

Author Roger Sherburn-Hall talked about Violet, The Canadian Lieutenant’s Wife as his audience enjoyed Canadian cookies and coffee.

He said: “My grandfather Frank Sherburn Hall was a Canadian infantry soldier.

“While in England Frank fell in love with a girl from Haslemere, and they got married in 1917, whilst he was on leave from the front.

“Violet Furlonger was his girl, and she was my grandmother. In 1919 Violet and Frank emigrated to the Saskatchewan prairies with their first baby.

“My freshly published book Violet, The Canadian Lieutenant’s Wife is their true story.”

The book is available for £8.99 on Amazon or by calling Roger Sherburn-Hall on 07930 300945.
