Dreams dashed in dark circumstances is the theme of The Road Dance (15), which will be shown at The Phoenix Theatre and Arts Centre in Bordon on May 2 at 2.30pm.

Fiery Scot Kirsty Macleod, played by Hermione Corfield, hopes for a better life away from the isolation of her small village on an island in the Outer Hebrides.

She has a boyfriend, Murdo (Will Fletcher), and they are already planning a future together.

But the First World War intervenes in this film based on John MacKay’s novel, a best-seller in Scotland.

Murdo is conscripted to fight, along with the other young men in the village, which is bad enough for Kirsty.

Then a dance is held in the soldiers’ honour the night before they leave, things get out of hand and Kirsty ends up being knocked unconscious and raped.

To complete a disastrous turn of events, Kirsty discovers she is pregnant – something she has to keep secret living in an age when having children out of wedlock was frowned upon and on an island dominated by the religious strictures of Calvinists.

This period romance and gripping drama features stunning scenery, outstanding performances and a deeply moving, unforgettable story.
