AS the senior media and PR officer for the Kidney Care UK charity, Sharon Woodward, 27, who lives in Alton, admits until now she has “only dipped my toes” into small fundraising activities.
But in the last 15 months, she has been busy raising money for Brain Tumour Research, and so far she has raised £1,690 with the help of generous friends, family and colleagues.
Sharon, whose father died from a brain tumour, said: “I still need to raise more to fund a day’s research – next year on my late father’s birthday, November 20 – as Brain Tumour Research is striving to fund a network of seven dedicated research centres while challenging the Government and larger cancer charities to invest more in brain tumour research.”
Sharon has already hosted a bake sale, held a tarantula and taken part in ‘wear a hat day’ to raise money for charity, but now she is taking on her biggest challenge, fire walking, to raise money for Brian Tumour Research and Brendoncare, because her son used to visit the residents there with his nursery.
The fire walk is taking place at Brendoncare in Alton at 7pm on November 25 and Sharon will be among a group testing their bravery by running across a bed of hot coals laid out in the grounds.
Elaine Warriner, marketing and communications manager for Brendoncare, said they held their first fire walk 10 years ago and it was very successful.
“So we decided to ask the same people in to organise another one and you don’t need to train for it, although those taking part will be given a two-hour training session before the start of the fire walk.”
