MUMS in Alton have latched on to a national scheme.

The occasion was the Global Big Latch-on, a special event to mark World Breastfeeding Week.

Mums and their babies made for the garden of town solicitors Bookers and Bolton last Friday to add to their weight to the breastfeeding awareness drive.

The event was organised by the Association of Breast Feeding, the National Childbirth Trust and local health visitors and was designed to raise awareness of breast feeding and how good it is not just for the baby but for the health of the mother as well.

Health visitor Polly Keane said they had about 20 mums and babies, also some toddlers, at the Friday morning session and that it had been “very successful”.

“We like to get the mothers together,” she said. “We can talk about the health advantages of breast feeding for their child and, if any are having difficulty, to show them the right way to do it.

“It is important we encourage mothers to breast feed as across the globe it is in decline as more of them are turning to bottle feeding.

“So getting them together, as we did last week which was also the first one we have held in Alton, was a good way of doing it and it was very successful.”

“We hope to organise another one, maybe in time for National Breast Feeding Week next June,”she added.
