A HOUSE on Petersfield Road, Greatham, was burgled at 9.30pm on Sunday.

A 40-year-old man returned home to discover the glass in his door smashed. He then saw a man running down the stairs. The homeowner attempted to detain him but he managed to escape.

The suspect barged into a neighbour on his way from the property causing him to fall to the floor and cut his head on the broken glass. He then drove off in a car with no lights on. The suspect is described as white, early to mid 20s, 5ft 8in, stocky and wearing a dark hooded top, dark trousers and a dark covering over his nose and mouth.

Det Con Steve Brown said: "This was an alarming incident for those involved and I would appeal to the public to contact us with any information that may help us to find the man responsible. Did you see or hear anything suspicious in the area on Sunday or the days prior to this incident?"
