East Hampshire MP Damian Hinds paid a visit to Alton-based OceanWise, which specialises in maritime environmental monitoring, mapping and data management.
The visit was organised by the Society of Maritime Industries and aimed to give Mr Hinds first-hand insight into the challenges and innovation within the UK’s maritime sector.
During his visit Mr Hinds met the OceanWise team and toured the company’s workshop, where he witnessed demonstrations of the innovative systems the company develops to monitor marine environments and send critical data to clients worldwide.
Managing director Caroline Levey outlined some of the key challenges facing small and medium-sized enterprises in the maritime sector.
She highlighted issues in retaining apprentices after training and discussed government procurement processes.
Caroline explained that while competitive tendering drove cost efficiencies, an over-emphasis on the lowest price could compromise technical quality and long-term project delivery.
She stressed the need for procurement frameworks that recognise the value of technical expertise and system reliability.
Caroline said: "Engaging with our local MP gave us an invaluable opportunity to share our perspective as a small or medium-sized enterprise operating in a technically demanding sector.
“We hope Damian gained insight into the practical challenges that affect small maritime businesses and the importance of supporting innovation alongside cost considerations in government procurement."
