A car park in Alton that was once full of hazardous potholes has been resurfaced - to the delight of a councillor who fought to have the work done.

Cllr Emily Young - the Liberal Democrat deputy group leader on East Hampshire District Council, who represents Alton Westbrooke - campaigned persistently for more than two years to persuade the authority to revamp the northern section of the 260-space Lady Place car park by the Public Gardens.

This car park is often used as a short-cut for motorists travelling in both directions through the town and had fallen into disrepair. As part of the project a damaged speed hump was also repaired and a second one was installed to improve safety for pedestrians and people living next to the car park.

The northern area of the car park was closed from October 20 to 24 but the southern part accessible from the High Street remained open, with Lady Place permit holders allowed to use any of the car parks in Alton.

Cllr Young said: “I’m delighted to see Lady Place car park finally resurfaced. I’ve been pushing for this for over two years after repeated complaints from residents about the poor condition and safety concerns.

“The potholes were so deep that one resident even got stuck in one on their mobility scooter and had to be rescued by another member of the public - it was unacceptable. I’m very glad that East Hampshire District Council has listened and taken action.

“This improvement brings a significant boost to safety and accessibility at one of Alton’s busiest town centre car parks. Residents, families and older users who rely on the facility can now look forward to a much smoother, safer experience. The upgraded surface also creates a more welcoming first impression for tourists and visitors to the town.”
