YOUNG choristers from Alton’s Wootey Junior School were among 800 children from schools across Hampshire who performed at the Music for Youth Proms at The Royal Albert Hall in London.

They were brought together by Hampshire County Council’s music service to take part in a programme which included a rendition of The Mary Rose, the work of Martin Read, the late composer and former head of music at Alton College.

The piece was originally commissioned for the county’s millennium celebrations.

Pupils from Wootey Junior and Butts Primary School in Alton had been selected to join the cast of young musicians and choristers, there to make music with the Hampshire county youth orchestras and county youth bands, supported by a 500-strong choir made up of school children and members of the Hampshire county youth choirs.

Morag Steel, a year six teacher at Wootey Junior School, said: “The children had a fantastic day at The Royal Albert Hall after many months of practising some quite tricky songs.

“We were all in awe as we entered such a grand building.

“As the audience arrived we took our positions along with other local schools. The atmosphere was unbelievable and we did feel a big part of what was a superb proms night.”
