THE University of Winchester is supporting the Extinction and Livestock Conference, a major international event exploring the impact of livestock production on the planet which takes place in London in October.
Organised by global farm animal welfare group Compassion in World Farming in partnership with the Worldwide Fund for Nature, and supported by the Alliance of Religions and Conservation, the European Environmental Bureau, and BirdLife EU as well as the University of Winchester, the conference brings together international experts to explore how intensive global farming systems can be transformed to benefit people, the planet and animals.
Professor Joy Carter, vice-chancellor of the University of Winchester, heads Setting the Planetary Scene, the opening session on the first day, introducing keynote speakers Kathryn Richardson, ocean sustainability expert at the University of Copenhagen, and Philip Lymbery, chiefexecutive of Compassion in World Farming and a visiting professor at the University of Winchester.
She said: “As a university with compassion and social justice at our heart, we are driven by a deep commitment to respect all life, cherishing people, animals and the planet. We care about the world around us and I am delighted that we are partnering with Compassion in World Farming, World Wildlife Foundation and other environmental institutions to support this international conference which tackles an important global challenge.
“I hope that the event will act as a catalyst for future collaboration and change and for developing much-needed solutions to the challenges faced.”
The conference takes place at the Queen Elizabeth II Centre in London on October 5-6. To register, visit extinctionconference.com.
