With girls and women’s sport enjoying unprecedented momentum following the Lionesses’ historic UEFA Euro win, St Nicholas’ School in Fleet is setting its sights on becoming the leading school for girls’ sport in the UK.

Already recognised as one of the top private schools in the local area, St Nicholas’ is placing athletic development and opportunity at the heart of its mission for national excellence.

The 2024/25 academic year has seen St Nicholas’ pupils deliver outstanding results across a wide range of disciplines, including netball, hockey, football, cricket, basketball, rounders, cross-country and athletics.

An extra-curricular programme has supported both participation and performance.

A highlight came in May when the school’s U17 Athletics team were crowned District Champions at the Aldershot & District Athletic Association meet.

The U16 basketball team dominated the season, winning the District Cup, Division 1 League title, and County Cup. The U16 netball team finished first in their league, while U15 teams in cricket and rounders also brought home championship titles.

Abigail Longworth, director of sport, said: “Our sporting success this year has been nothing short of remarkable. We’ve seen tremendous growth in both our participation and competitive results, reflecting the strength of our commitment to girls’ sport.”

Headteacher Dr Olwen Wright added: “Sport plays an integral role in the holistic development of every pupil at St Nicholas'.

“With our sights set on becoming the best girls’ school in the country, we continue to invest in our sport programmes and provide opportunities for all our pupils to excel.”

The school’s annual sports awards on July 4 featured dual-sport GB athlete Katie Cox, who inspired pupils to pursue their sporting ambitions with confidence and determination.

The independent day school based at Church Crookham educates girls aged 3 to 16 and boys aged 3 to 7.
