THE first open day of the year at the Alresford Eel House took place on March 16, attracting a record 209 visitors who contributed £149 toward the Eel House Restoration Fund which now stands at £11,250.
According to New Alresford Town Trust spokesman Pam Stevens, since its restoration in 2008 the number of people to visit the Eel House stands at 6,499, with the hope of topping 7,000 by the end of the season.
She added: “Apart from being a unique feature for the town, it is becoming an ever-increasing tourist attraction. The next open day, on May 21, coincides with the Watercress Festival.
David Woods, the Eel House chairman, has applied for a licence to catch eels, as well as producing a board highlighting nearly 100 donors.
Volunteers are always sought. Anyone who can help should call trustee Paddy Walshe on 01962 733422.
