The Watercress Line is holding an Engineering Open Weekend featuring its flagship steam engine No. 35005 Canadian Pacific on September 13 and 14.

This Oliver Bulleid-designed locomotive was launched at the railway in March following a 14-year restoration project by Watercress Line volunteers which was supported by The National Lottery Heritage Fund.

Canadian Pacific was built at the Eastleigh Locomotive Works in 1941 by a Southern Railway team including many women.

The Engineering Open Weekend will offer a behind the scenes experience at Ropley station with a chance to meet the team who keep the trains running.

This tour is free as part of Heritage Open Days, and current restoration projects will be showcased in the engineering hub.

There will be access to the yard, engineering shed and carriage shop viewing galleries, where visitors can learn more about the maintenance and restoration of steam locomotives and rolling stock.

At Medstead & Four Marks station there will be lever pulling in the period signal box, and visitors can enjoy unlimited train travel on the line.

Railway societies will have stands displaying their locomotive projects, people can find out more about volunteering on the Watercress Line, and there will be interactive activities and displays for children.

Watercress Line chief executive Rebecca Dalley said: “Don’t miss this fantastic opportunity to view our flagship Canadian Pacific and many other exciting restoration projects at the Engineering Open Weekend.

“You'll see the passion and expertise that goes into maintaining our locomotives and carriages. We’re incredibly proud of our team’s work, and this event allows us to share their story in an engaging, hands-on way.

“Whether you’re a lifelong rail enthusiast or looking for a great day out with the family, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.”
