The Alton Concert Band brought the Proms to Gilbert White’s House in Selborne with A Magical Evening of Music on August 28.

Intermittent rain - unusual in a previously hot and dry summer - failed to dampen the spirits of a large and appreciative open-air crowd.

They enjoyed their picnics while being entertained by patriotic favourites from the band under the direction of Jeremy Hilton Morrish.

Philip Sparke’s arrangement of Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody proved especially popular and Percy Grainger’s Country Gardens was highly appropriate for this beautiful and historic setting.

And soloist Wendy Busby led the audience in traditional Proms style with a medley of songs from the Second World War, including White Cliffs of Dover, I Vow To Thee My Country, Jerusalem, Rule, Britannia! and Land of Hope and Glory.
