Whitehill & Bordon food bank has bagged nearly 600kg in groceries for grateful users thanks to a month-long partnership between a supermarket and FareShare.

Less fortunate people around the town have been given a helping hand by Tesco shoppers and the food bank, run by the Whitehill & Bordon Community Trust (WBCT).

People who visited the superstore during August were encouraged by Tesco to buy and donate pre-packed bags of essential groceries for food bank users.

The response was “immediate and sustained” with more than half a tonne of much-needed groceries being handed over to the food bank for distribution around the town.

“Six hundred kilos is a genuinely significant amount of food for a food bank of our size,” said a spokesperson for the WBCT.

“And to think, it all came from ordinary shoppers choosing to pick up an extra bag for someone less fortunate – we’re grateful to every one of them.”

Shoppers also learned how ‘every little helps’ on several occasions during the month, as food bank volunteers set up stall in the store on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays for three weeks to explain the work of the Trust in the local community.

The donations made by Tesco shoppers will go directly into the weekly food banks the WBCT provides to the 80 families currently on its books.

The spokesperson for the WBCT added: “We would like to give particular thanks to Dionne at the Tesco Bordon store, who set up the whole promotion and made sure it ran smoothly from start to finish.

“This promotion has made a real difference to the families we support every week.”

* The WBCT is holding a craft fayre from 10am to 3pm on Sunday, September 13, at Hogmoor Inclosure. Expect to see a “fantastic selection” of handmade crafts, unique gifts, artisan products and more.
