Dangerous railings overlooking a busy commuter route into Farnham town centre could be repaired after some were being held together by single screws or even a wedged stick.

The oak railings run alongside a steep verge above Castle Hill and Castle Street, beside the cobbled Blind Bishops Steps leading towards Farnham Park.

There are concerns that pedestrians using the railings for support while negotiating the steps may not realise how unstable some sections are, with the steep verge dropping towards the busy road below.

Resident Ionella Emmett first raised concerns with the town council in December 2025, warning about the condition of the railings and the potential danger to pedestrians.

Some sections are reportedly being held together by a single screw, while in other places a wedged stick is helping to support the structure.

The issue had previously been investigated by Surrey County Council officers but the railings had not been repaired.

Now Farnham Town Council has agreed to contribute £4,498 towards the work, with hopes the repairs can be completed before hundreds of people use the steps for Farnham’s Fireworks Night.

Cllr George Hesse said: “Thank you to Farnham Town Council for supporting this and finding the money to fix these posts. I’m hoping that these can be fixed before hundreds travel up and down the steps for Fireworks Night.

“It was Ionella who passionately raised this issue at a Town Council meeting. We need more residents to do the same and raise these issues in town.”

Cllr Tony Fairclough said the town council needed to take the initiative rather than wait for other authorities to act.

He said: “As a council we need to accept we can’t always rely on other councils to come to our aid.”

The town council’s £4,498 contribution will cover nearly a quarter of the cost of repairing the railings, with Surrey County Council funding the remainder.
