Farnham Town Football Club’s success on the field looks set to see it granted a new 25-year lease on its ground – and the scope to modernise its stadium to match its new status.

The club’s run of success has seen it reach into  National League South, Step 2, and as a result Farnham Town needs extra  space for expansion and improvements to comply with Football Association criteria for promotion.

Waverley Borough Council’s decision to grant the club a new lease includes an area of land next to its Memorial Hall car park and the space required to get on with the job.

“The football club is a popular community organisation in the town and has become a sporting hub for Farnham, promoting participation in sport for the local community,” papers presented to Tuesday, October 6’s executive committee read.

Cllr Mark Merryweather, executive member for finance at Waverley Borough Council said: “Farnham Town FC’s recent success has been outstanding and to the benefit of Farnham and Waverley and all of our residents.

“It’s a real pleasure to be supporting something that aligns not only with our explicit corporate objectives and our explicit corporate strategy, including not least economic development.

“But it is also the source of some genuine community pride.

“I do believe that Farnham and Waverley are fortunate to have in the club tenants and a team who are committed to making the most of this opportunity.”

The value of the lease has been kept confidential but will need final rubber stamping by the newly former West Surrey Shadow council.

These apply to any deals worth more than £1million with the shadow body so far backing the sovereign borough decisions.

Cllr Kika Mirylees portfolio holder for community services, leisure and EDI, added: “I have to say this being a Farnham girl, it’s just brilliant actually that we’ve done so well with football over the last year and I know it’s hugely important getting out there and playing sports.”
