EMERGENCY firefighter Philip Brooks has called it a day after 35 years serving in Alton.

He was presented with a service medal and certificate by area manager Steve Trevethick in front of his colleagues at the fire station on April 14.

But a bigger farewell celebration is planned to honour Philip’s long service.

Philip followed a family tradition when he became a retained firefighter as his father Ron rose to the rank of sub-officer in the service.

When Philip signed on it was at the old Alton fire station on the High Street before the move to premises on Butts Road.

Engineer Philip, who is married with grown up children and grandchildren, started in the service in 1981.

“He’s always been available,” said watch manager Ian Crawley. “And if I had a whole station full of Philip Brookses it would make my management so easy.

“I must also pay tribute to his wife and family who have given him so much support especially when he has been called out at hours that can disrupt home life.”

The plan now, he said, is to give Philip “a proper leaving do at the station on April 29 starting at 7.30pm and what we would like would be for all those who served with him over his 35 years to come and say goodbye to him, as well as all his friends and family”.

He added:“If any of his former colleagues would like to come just contact me at Alton fire station.”
