ALTON Town Council’s traditional pancake race had to be called off on Tuesday because of heavy rain, but this didn’t dampen spirits in Alton.

With true British resolve, the community still celebrated Shrove Tuesday thanks to the Greater Alton Project Churches which opened their doors at St Lawrence

Parish Hall to welcome families and offer free hot pancakes for all.

Alton mayor Dean-Paul Phillips said: “It’s such a shame that the races had to be cancelled due to the bad weather. However, it was great fun at St Lawrence

Parish Hall. There was a great turn out from the community who certainly

weren’t going to let the wet weather spoil Pancake Day in Alton.

“I would like to extend my sincere thanks to Tim Codling and his fellow members of the Greater Alton Project Churches who cooked lots of delicious pancakes for everyone to enjoy.”

Alton Town Council expressed thanks also to the Four Marks and Medstead Rotary Club whose members had offered to help in advance of the event, and to Faye Bobillier, owner of Sweet Chocolate in Westbrook Walk, who was

set to donate the prizes for the races.
