THE Friends of Mike Hawthorn commemorated the 60th anniversary of the celebrated Formula One world champion’s death at West Street cemetery on Tuesday.
Tim Ely, the proud owner of Mike’s first car, recalled visiting the Barley Mow with Mike after races.
“It was Mike’s favourite pub and we used to drink a few beers together and sing Old King Cole,” he said.
Although Tim is one of the few left of Mike’s friends, the Farnham Flyer’s memory lives on as motoring enthusiasts from all backgrounds gathered to celebrate his life.
Owner of the replica Jaguar (pictured above) Nigel Webb said: “Mike’s legacy still exists in people’s minds 60 years on.”
The car, a ‘labour of love’ which took ten years to construct, is a near- exact replica of Mike’s, even down to the key lock numbers.
“Not one for gloom”, he felt Mike would have heartily approved of the pub lunch that followed, where the group raised a glass to his memory.
