Support is growing for a grassroots campaign to create a community garden in a village between Alton and Farnham.

Villagers are ready to get their hands dirty as the Vicarage Garden project was recently launched in Binsted.

Binsted Primary School figures have teamed up with Holy Cross Church and supportive residents with the aim of transforming a space next to the churchyard and vicarage into a community garden.

And after weeks of discussion and input from all ages and backgrounds, the proposals were laid bare on October 7 before an excited audience.

The project follows the 2024 launch of the school’s successful gardening club with pupils being asked for ideas on what could be in the garden.

Hopes are high the space will be used by the school for outdoor learning, and by the wider community to promote wellbeing and open air activity.

Binsted Primary School headteacher, Henry Jennings, believes the project is the chance to do something special both for pupils and villagers.

He said: “The chance to do something which benefits our children and the whole community is a rare one.

“We are hoping to create something which enriches the lives of our children as we revel in the outdoors here at Binsted Primary School.

“We have seen many times the transformative effects nature has on all our wellbeing.”

The space between the vicarage and church is currently unused with initial plans including various patches, raised beds and pollinator-friendly areas.

“We have some real experts in the local area helping us raise money and advising on how to make the most of this for everyone in our community,” said a parent involved in the project.

An outside prayer space is also planned with work due to start later this year. If you would like to get involved email [email protected]
