BOSSES at Hampshire County Council have welcomed the Prime Minister’s plans for better schools, including the reintroduction of controversial grammar schools announced last week.

Executive member for education councillor Peter Edgar, who opposed Tory plans to force all schools to become acadamies earlier this year, said: “Anything that improves opportunities for children from all backgrounds is to be supported. The Prime Minister is absolutely correct in her assertion that children from relatively poor backgrounds should have better access to high quality education.

“Our overriding principle, is every young person matters. I welcome the Government’s commitment to having diversity in the system. We will need to respond positively to the green paper.”
