A LASHAM cadet has become the first to fly solo on his 14th birthday, making him the youngest glider pilot in the UK.

Guy Roth, from Headley, got up early on the morning of his birthday, arriving at Lasham Gliding Society for a special opening of the club so that he could fly his first solo in a glider.

The flight, early on Monday, makes him the first cadet in the UK to fly solo in a glider since the age restriction was lowered from 16 to 14, in line with the rest of Europe.
