An intrepid team of four from Haslemere are tackling an epic fundraising challenge, driving 2,500km across the Indian Himalayas by tuk tuk unsupported, unguided and unprepared.

They are fundraising for charities supporting children and their families facing cancer in the UK.

Marcus Isherwood – the grandson of the late former Haslemere town and Waverley borough councillor Peter Isherwood – Ollie and Archie Somers and Annabel Whelan all went to schools in Haslemere from nursery age.

They now all study at the University of Exeter and – together with their friend Tori Claridge – are taking on the driving challenge.

After arriving in India, they had two days to prepare their two tuk tuks.

They set off from Jaisalmer Fort, in the middle of the Thar Desert in Rajasthan, and have to travel about 2,500km to Leh in Kashmir, tackling about 1,000km of remote valleys and seasonal high passes, rising to 5,328 metres at the Tanglang La pass in the Himalayas.

They are raising money for Young Lives vs Cancer, Supershoes and Cool Earth – who work alongside indigenous villages to halt rainforest destruction.

They started with a target to raise £5,000 but have now raised £15,700.
