A Grade II listed pub, restaurant and hotel in a south of Butser village has gone on the market for a seven-figure sum.
Whitbread is selling off the freehold to the Red Lion and adjoining 46-room Premier Inn hotel in Horndean for £2.5million as part of a raft of closures and cost-cutting measures.
While the pub on the village square remains open for the time being, the marketing brochure produced by Christie & Co highlights some of the issues facing the hospitality trade.
Turnover details show the Red Lion considerably increased its breakfast, restaurant and drink sales from 2023 to 2024, with total sales rising from 1.167million to 1.265million over the period.
But its wage and utility costs rose by a combined £81,000, while business rates increased by a staggering 161 per cent from £18,000 to £47,000.
