LOVE Haslemere, Hate Waste, has hosted its third repair cafe at the town hall.

The repair cafe helps people to save money, learn new skills and divert items from landfill.

The ministry of menders have the skills to repair everything including toys, bikes, electrical items, wooden items, upholstery and clothing, and they share their skills with everyone who comes to visit the cafe.

This month, the repairers had a huge variety of items come in for repair including a television, a desk fan, a lamp, a ceramic pig ornament, a clock and even an axe.

People are also invited to come along, even if they don’t have anything to repair, for a cup of tea and a chat with the repairers and the Love Haslemere, Hate Waste team.

One of the repairs collected this month was a 45-year-old hockey stick which needed new grip tape around the handle, and the stick had split through disrepair.

Repairer David carefully glued, clamped and sanded the split, following which the wood was restored and new tape placed on the handle.

The hockey stick now belongs to Simon Slater, whose brother Jeremy Slater played for Surrey in the 1970s.

Simon was delighted to have the hockey stick repaired and is planning to mount it on the wall to display it proudly at his home.

The cafe receives donations from people whose items are repaired through its online JustGiving page at www.justgiving.com/lovehaslemere-hatewaste

The repair cafe is currently raising funds to launch a Library of Things, a permanent space where people can borrow items they only need for a short time like hedge strimmers, power drills or even curling tongs.

The repair cafe this month was combined with a Christmas jumper swap, with Haslemere residents bringing in jumpers of all sizes to swap, saving people money and diverting clothing from landfill.

The next repair cafe will be on Saturday, February 5 at Haslemere Town Hall from 10am to 1pm.
