A SERVICE of thanksgiving was held at Alton Methodist Church on October 6 to celebrate the life of Frances Mary Orme.
Frances, who lived at Netherfield Close in Alton, was described as "a wonderful and remarkable lady" by her husband Alan Orme.
He said: "Frances was beloved by so many and is much missed by her family, whom she had served so well as a wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.
"Almost every consolation card was filled with the way she had helped others - quietly, not seeking the limelight.
"And she managed to be married to me for 64 years as well!"
Frances had a reputation as a great host, said Alan: "Her hospitality was outstanding, always serving without fuss, even when there was ’nothing in the larder’. How often guests would marvel at a choice of three desserts!"
She also had lots of time for children: "She welcomed the young and taught them practical cookery, needlework, how to recycle everything, and so much else. No visit was complete without going for a walk, even if it meant wellies."
Alan said the occasion was uplifting: "The church was packed with those who had benefited from her quiet wisdom.
"There was no need for sadness, because she was ’just passing through’, as her faith had sustained her, and aided many others, for over 70 years. Indeed, a life well lived."
