I was in The Borough on Sunday, waiting for Boots to open. It was almost 10.30am. Two stewards appeared at the bottom of Castle Street and placed two, big, plastic barriers across the road, blocking the traffic from the road to South Street.
The cars suddenly backed up with irate drivers bursting from their cars, insisting that the road be opened. Their business was clearly very important. Meanwhile, other drivers quickly made multiple point turns in order to get back to West Street and away.
It was Remembrance Sunday and the slight inconvenience was in order for the marching band to go from Castle Street to the war memorial in Gostrey Meadow. A number of the drivers had more important things to do, I guess. It did make me wonder, though, if the young men in the trenches were as impatient, when it came to going over the top?
I heard the other day that the young don’t understand the importance of Remembrance Day anymore but, if Sunday was anything to go by, I think it’s their parents. They should bear in mind that the only reason they are free to be irate is because of those young men.
