A three-vehicle collision on the B3006 at Selborne on Saturday afternoon left a 35-year-old Petersfield man fighting for his life.
A 20-year-old man from Minstead, in the New Forest, was arrested at the scene on suspicion of careless driving after the collision, which happened at 4.35pm near the Hall Lane junction.
He was released on bail, pending further inquiries, until October 20.
The B3006 was closed for several hours in both directions and a diversion set up after the injured man was rushed to Southampton General Hospital where he remains in a critical condition.
Sergeant Dave Sanderson said: "We would like to hear from anyone who may have witnessed the accident."
