Forget Beckham getting a knighthood: A youth football club based in Alton has its own goldenballs as they’ve just celebrated their 50th anniversary.

A roundup of 1975 makes grim reading with the Yorkshire Ripper, IRA bombings, football hooliganism and the fall of Saigon all making the headlines.

But for thousands of football-loving children and teens, it was the start of something really special, as Keith and Eileen Cox decided to start a youth football club in Alton.

That club, Manor Colts, is still going strong today and the late couple were in everyone’s hearts and minds during a golden anniversary event at Anstey Park.

The event held at Alton Rugby Club was a joyous affair, being split between the usual end-of-season proceedings, like the annual trophy presentation, and a celebration of the last half century.

Two of the most poignant moments involved figures with a long history in the club with Denise Roberts, daughter of late MCYFC founders Keith and Eileen, being made the club’s Honorary President.

There was also a nod to John Priddle as he was awarded the title of Honorary Vice-President for 35 years of dedicated service to the club. A new trophy, The Priddle Presentation Plaque, was also created to acknowledge the continued support John gives to the club.

“Denise has quite a bit of history with the club and she was very touched to become Honorary President – it was quite poignant moment,” said Danielle Gray, MCYFC Chair and Club Welfare Officer.

“We’re very proud of our club. We’re still growing, we’re still getting more teams coming through, including an Under 8 girls team.

“Football, especially within the Alton area, is doing really well and we’re a part of that.”

The club also presented Phyllida Halsey with farewell gifts and flowers for more than a decade of volunteering.
