JANE Austen’s House Museum in Chawton needs volunteers to act as house stewards at weekends.

Volunteers can take on a full day or half-day shift but must be able to commit to at least one shift per month.

Janet Johnstone, stewards manager, said: “We are entering a very busy time of the year for the museum and need additional stewards at weekends when we are particularly busy. Our aim is always to give all of our visitors a memorable experience of visiting Jane Austen’s home.”

“A friendly face as you come through the front door always makes our visitors feel welcome.’

Volunteers welcome visitors to the house and help direct them around the site as well as overseeing hands-on activities and answering questions about the history of the house and the museum collection.

House stewards don’t need a comprehensive knowledge of Jane Austen and her work and training is given on all aspects of the role.

Stewards also have the opportunity to help with museum events such as workshops, private views, and music performances.

Anyone is interested in becoming a volunteer house steward should e-mail Janet Johnstone at [email protected] or call 01420 83262.
