NAZANIN Zaghari-Ratcliffe, the British-Iranian charity worker detained in Iran nearly six years ago and wife of Farnham man Richard Ratcliffe, is on her way back to the UK today (Wednesday) after her release in Tehran.

The 43-year-old mum of one was arrested at Tehran airport in 2016 after taking her then-two year old daughter Gabriella to meet her grandparents for the first time, and accused of plotting to overthrow the Iranian government, which she denied.

Nazanin and Richard’s MP in Hampstead and Kilburn, Tulip Siddiq, broke the news this morning, tweeting that Nazanin was at the airport once again in Tehran and this time was “on her way home”.

It comes just a day after Ms Siddiq confirmed Nazanin had her passport returned by the Iranian authorities at her family home in Tehran, where she had been held under house arrest for the last two years of her detention.

The prime minister Boris Johnson also confirmed negotiations were underway on Wednesday morning.

Asked by broadcasters at the Emirates Palace hotel in Abu Dhabi whether a UK negotiating team was in the Iranian capital attempting to secure her release, the prime minister sai: “It is true and it has been for a long time that we’re negotiating for the release of our dual nationals in Tehran.

“There are some very sad cases, including Nazanin. I really don’t think I should say much more, I’m sorry, although things are moving forward … those negotiations continue to be under way and we’re going right up to the wire.”
