The developer of an Alton estate is drawing up plans to build dozens of homes on a cherished patch of farmland between three south of Butser villages.

Hallam Land is preparing a planning application to build up to 150 homes on the White Dirt Farm site between Horndean, Clanfield and Catherington.

The move comes more than a decade after a scheme for 135 homes on the sloping site was rejected by East Hampshire District Council.

But this likely application will be bigger – and comes on the back of draft bids by other developers to build up to 180 and 125 homes at the Sunderton Lane and Charity Farm sites either side of Clanfield, respectively.

Hallam Land, which built the 180-home Will Hall Road development in Alton, has yet to submit an outline or full application for the White Dirt Farm site.

But it’s coming, with the firm asking EHDC if they need to submit an Environmental Impact Assessment as part of their bid to develop the 24 acre greenfield site.

Should their plans progress, access would come from Southdown Road with the new estate boasting a range of housing types and public open space. Agents, LRM Planning Ltd, said that development would not be disproportionate and have called the would-be estate a “natural extension of North Horndean”.

They added: “The scale and layout of the development would be consistent with the character of the adjoining residential area, with extensive areas of green infrastructure and open space.”

More than 20 representations have been made at the time of writing with consistent concerns being raised about the loss of farmland, green space and wildlife.

Some objectors have also remarked that “nothing has changed” since the 2014 application.
