AS East Hampshire District Council's North Planning Committee met on Wednesday to determine applications by Tesco and MolsonCoors/Vale Retail to build two new supermarkets, it was revealed some people had supported a newcomer.

Having made its stand at the 11th hour, Waitrose joined the running list with a public consultation exhibition at Alton Assembly Rooms last Thursday to test the water before submitting an outline application for a new store next to Alton station.
