HOLYBOURNE’S young footballers will be able to emulate their World Cup heroes this summer after the village netted a couple of goals for its kick-about space.

The two new goals have been installed on Holybourne’s playing field and are open for anyone to use.

The village’s East Hampshire District Council (EHDC) representative Glynis Watts funded the goals with a £1,000 grant to Alton Town Council.

She said: “We all agree that getting kids outside and active is important for their physical and social wellbeing but to do that we must give them the right facilities.

“These goals will encourage Holybourne’s youngsters outside and playing football and that’s why I am delighted to be able to support this project.”

Her grant also helped pay for two new bins for the near-by play area.

Graham Hill, chairman of ATC open spaces committee, said: “As part of the town council’s open space strategy we are doing all we can to support the playing of sports at many locations in the town.

“I am particularly pleased that councillor Watts, through the EHDC councillor grant scheme, has been able to provide funding for a new set of football goal posts and nets for the play area in Holybourne.

“This informal football pitch is primarily intended for youngsters who live close by.”

Every EHDC councillor has £4,500 they can use to support local projects. Grants can be awarded up to a maximum of £1,000.
