THE first ever Alton Repair Cafe opened its doors on Saturday.
By the end of the morning volunteers had carried out 58 repairs.
The event will now be held on the second Saturday of the month at Alton Community Centre, where expert fixers will give their time for free repairing household items.
Penney Hames, one of the cafe’s organisers, said: “There are no guarantees of success but the team of repairers take delight in taking things apart, diagnosing the fault and then putting it right, where possible.
“At the outset of this first event, 11 repairers were installed and briefed, but over the next three hours ten more people offered their services – some to repair and some to help run the day.
“Three newbie repairers even stayed on and had a go at repairing various items.
“A testament to the community spirit of the entire venture.”
Items such as a wine cooler, a massage chair, headphones, a TV, clothes, kitchen gadgets and much more were repaired.
The next Alton Repair Cafe will be held from 10am to 1pm on Saturday, October 12, with more rooms dedicated to repairs.
