A resident of an Alton road with a narrow pavement has objected to Hampshire County Council over a plan to change parking arrangements there.
Dian Sellers has lived on the southern side of Spitalfields Road, where the pavement is only three feet wide, since 2004.
Traffic Order Proposal A2083/DL includes no waiting at any time regulations on parts of both sides of the road.
In her objection, Dian said: “A live lane of traffic would be located 90cm from the front doors and windows of numbers 14 to 22 Spitalfields Road due to the narrow footpath on the south side. This will bring increased traffic fumes, noise and dirt to my house.
“None of the houses directly affected have front gardens. I rely on the parked cars as a buffer between my house and moving traffic. The parked cars protect me when leaving my house on to a narrow footpath.
“The family dog, visiting children and visitors entering and leaving with pushchairs are also protected by having moving traffic located on the north side of the road.”
Dian added: “The reasons given for the changes are to ‘address the concerns of vehicle exhaust fumes entering nearby properties and make improved access for pedestrians due to the narrowness of the pathway’.
“I do not understand how ‘traffic fumes’ from parked cars are solved by putting traffic fumes from moving traffic in their place.
“If traffic fumes and engine idling were a true issue, if the residents had felt that safety of themselves, their houses or the passing families or children could have been improved, if we felt that vehicle access around the corner to Youngs Road would be made safer or easier, or if access into our homes needed improving - no matter how small that improvement was - we would have just started parking that side of the road anyway!”
