A FIRE at the Hartley Park Business Centre on the B3006 Selborne to Alton road caused the release of chemicals into the Caker Stream, last Tuesday evening.

The blaze completely destroyed two barns, one of which housed Topaz International, a company dealing in essential oils and aroma chemicals, which were washed into the stream by water used to douse the flames. The Environment Agency said that the pollution moved downstream and killed thousands of fish, with brown trout, dace, bullheads and minnows all being affected.
