A SENSE of alarm is rising in Selborne over a £1.2m scheme on the A3 Ham Barn roundabout which is likely to send more 'illegal' traffic on the B3006 through the village.
By doing so, Hampshire Highways Agency would, they say, be encouraging drivers to break the law.
And the impact on Gilbert White's historic village of Selborne could be "devastating".
"It is beyond belief," said Selborne Parish Council chairman, Jo Clay, adding that while councillors were shown the plans earlier this year, "presented as a fait accompli", they were not made aware of the reason for the work.
Hampshire Highways Agency now states it is "to allow easier access for heavy good vehicles" onto the B3006.
