A MUM and daughter sewing day at Gilbert White’s House in Selborne on Saturday proved such a success that it could be repeated later in the year.

It came about as a suggestion by volunteer Frances Law, a talented needlewoman in her own right, that it might be a nice thing to have mums and daughters sewing together and making things they could use at home.

The event was held in the Hampshire Barn and six mums and their daughters, who were aged seven and up, came along to enjoy a tranquil day making items of their choice such as pillow cases, table mats and keepsakes.

As sewing seems to be a dying art, although Gilbert White’s nieces probably spent their days with a needle and thread as it was a Georgian pass time, one or two of those taking part were grateful for a little help from Frances to get started.

It proved to be a fun day and everyone headed home with examples of their work.

A spokesman for Gilbert White said: “It was a nice start to the half-term holidays and everyone enjoyed it so much they told Frances they would like another sewing day.”
