FOLLOWING a busy year for tourism in Alton – with additional visitors coming to town for the 200th anniversary of Jane Austen’s death, the Sitting with Jane art trail, the 40th anniversary of the re-opening of the Mid Hants Railway, and the 150th anniversary of the death of Sweet Fanny Adams – the visitor information point has received a boost with new signage.
Town and district councillor Graham Hill, who used his East Hampshire district councillor grant to fund the sign, said of the project: “With the town’s distinctive blue fingerpost signs being re-painted, to help visitors locate key points in Alton, it’s important to ensure that the buildings are easily recognisable.
“The tourist information facility on Cross and Pillory Lane has been without a hanging sign for some time, and this new sign is an opportunity to ensure that it stands out.”
He added: “Because it is something I feel very strongly about I was happy to fund it out of my district councillor grant.”
