ALTON folk gathered at the Cairn on Sunday morning for a Service of Remembrance to mark the 95th anniversary of Armistice Day.

That was the day that the armistice was signed between the Allies of World War I and Germany at Compiègne, France, for the cessation of hostilities on the Western Front – an historic event that took effect from the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month of 1918.

On this bright autumn morning, as the sun shone down on hundreds of children from the town's uniformed organisations, standing quietly alongside serving members of the Armed and Emergency forces, two white doves soared into the air above the war memorial – in an unscheduled, yet uplifting message of peace in this troubled world in which we live.
